Nappaa kahvimotti seuraksi, luvassa pitkä postaus ja paljon kuveja.

I spent last weekend in Bellingham with 4 friends. We took our wheels and spun and spun and spun, and knitted some, too. And shopped like there'd be no tomorrow.

My friends gave me really precious gifts: Nichole gave me an ounce of Chinese cashmere, Katie gave me a skein of lace-weight merino, and Karen gave me some cranberry soap from a cranberry fair and some wool wash. I was told to spin the cashmere and not just pet it, so I'll probably blend it with some natural alpaca I bought. I can blend it myself now that I got my fine cloth carders! It's very very soft, so soft that I just want to pet it and never let go. (You know the movie American Pie? Well, it's like pie, but better.)

Ensteks mie sain ystäviltä vähän kaikenlaista jännää: kiinalaista kashmiria Nicholelta, pitsin tikutteluun ohuenohutta merinoa Katielta ja karpalosaippuaa ja villanpesuainetta Karenilta. Minut vannotettiin kehräämään kashmir pian, joten taidan sen sekoittaa luonnonvalkoiseen alpakkaan ja neuloa jotakin ihanaa siitä. Ensin kyllä vähän hiplaan sitä, se on tosi tosi pehmoista. It's amazingly beautiful, and was worth every penny. It's really good for storing beads, for example, if someone had bought some beads up in Bellingham.

I also found a new flyer for Sylvie, which was very good as she was frowning on Friday when I took the Louet with me and not her. I found the Ashford standard flyer by accident, in a great store called Northwest Handspun, and they also had the one Lavold book I have been searching for since I discovered Lavold's great work. I also found a really cute little bag made in Korea and a handy needle gauge. (I know I need another needle gauge like I need a hole in my head but I couldn't resist it.)

Löysin uuden nopeamman kehrän Sylville, joka oli vähän nyreissään kun en ottanut sitä mukaan. I had almost promised myself not to buy any more yarn, but then...

Well, these pretty purple Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool skeins attacked me, and they brought two balls of Rowan Felted Tweed with them. 14 skeins of Elsebeth Lavold Angora joined them, I really had no say in it. They're all so beautiful, though.

I haven't only bought yarn, I also dyed some (future) yarn: almost solid braid of Falkland.

I also bought some merino-alpaca-silk blend and some merino (which may or may not have silk in it, I can't remember), which will be yarn later.

And I have been spinning, madly. Remember the Toffee Yarn? I did another test skein, this time I carded the fibers together before spinning. I knit another swatch, and the colors blend really nicely. I liked this second one better, for my sweater anyway, so I carded some more and spun a 7oz skein. I can cast on for my sweater very soon - very exciting!

Ja kaiken huipuksi olen kerennyt kehräämäänkin: tein toisen testivyyhdin Toffeeta. Tällä kertaa karstasin kuidut ennen kehruuta, ja neulasin pienen testitilkun. Tämä jälkimmäinen sopii paremmin paitavisiooni, joten otin ja karstasin 200g villaa ja kehräsin sen jo isoksi vyyhdiksi. Kunhan se kuivuu niin otan ja luon silmukat!

Beige with Hints of Green

I know this second post in two days is very unexpected considering my past post frequency, but I couldn't wait to come and show you the test skein I made of the Toffee Yarn.

Tohkeissani polkkaan heti perään testivyyhdin Toffee-langasta. Tuli nätti!

It turned out beautiful. It's thick, for my taste anyway, and the colors are very pretty.

Siitä tuli pehmeä ja paksu, ainakin minun makuun, ja värit ovat aika makoisat.

The skein might be slightly overplied, but this is a test skein so I won't let it bother me too much. This yarn is roughly 14 WPI, and knits to a gauge of 21 sts/4" (or 5,25 sts to an inch).

Voi olla että pistin liikaa kierrettä testivyyhtiin, mutta en anna sen häiritä, kun ei tämä ole kuin vasta treenausta. Langasta tuli 14WPI ja mallitilkussa tiheys 21s/10cm.

I think I see the Tomten Jacket in the very near future for this yarn. Or maybe I'll design something myself, I have a couple of ideas.

This post is in danger of becoming an ode á beige, so let's all look at this green merino-silk to balance all the beige. This will become my new Red Dragon Shawl. Or, in fact, Green Dragon.

I Can Haz Fluff!

(This'll be one of the posts with no inner coherence whatsoever. Consider yourselves warned.)

Look at this beautiful basket I got from Katie! It's huge and it's pretty! I am told it was handmade in Ghana. I love it! My fluff (some of it) lives in the basket now.

Sain aivan ihanan korin Katielta. On kuulemma käsintehty Ghanassa. Tästä tein ittelle kehruukorin - mahtuu paljon villaa ja on nätti ko mikä. Ja koriin muutti jo läjä karvaisia asioita.

The current residents of the basket are 3 pounds of BFL in three colors: 1 natural (undyed) and 2 brown rovings.

Koriasukit on vajaa puolitoista kiloa sininaamalammasta kolmessa värissä: 1 luonnonvärinen värjäämätön letti ja kaksi ruskealla värjättyä.

I dyed these myself, and I intend to blend them into what I call Toffee Yarn (because of the colors). I have ordered hand carders, so I may end up blending them by carding. That was my original idea.

Ihan itse värjäsin, näistä pitäis tulla Toffee-lankaa (värien takia). Tilasin jo karstatkin, joten voi olla että sekoitan kuidut karstaamalla. Se oli ainakin alunperin ajatus.

However, I couldn't wait for the carders to arrive, so I took three little pieces of each roving, spun some singles and plied them. My first attempt at java..naja..navajo plying (also known as chain plying, I think) is not pretty but it sure was a lot of fun!

En malttanu oottaa karstoja, joten otin pienet pätkät villoja kaikista kolmesta letistä ja suhauttelin säikeeksi. Kertasin sen navajo-tekniikalla, ja eka kokeilu ei ole nätti mutta hauska kokeilu sinänsä.

I will definitely chain ply all of the Toffee Yarn, now that I figured how to do it. And I get points for not plying the living daylight out of it. Am very happy.

That's not the only bit of spinning I've done. I ventured into uncharted territory (for me), and discovered myself in the Land of Chunky Novelty Yarn.

It was warm and cozy. There was 5 ounces and some 200 yards of fluffy coziness. I didn't want to leave, but my comfort zone, Land of Lace-Weight, called, and I answered.

I fell into some 3,5 ounces and hundreds of yards of lace-weight turquoise and teal merino. I only hand-plied this one - I used the merino thread Kristin gave me. I already have plans for this.

I also made a little trip to the Land of Post Office, which is a scary and funny-smelling place. I found there some yarn which had traveled all the way from Germany.

A pal in Frankfurt sent me these: yarn for three pairs of socks! And so that the yarn wouldn't feel lonely, they were accompanied by some Fluff.

There is some 1,5 ounces of Röhrschaf, a rare German breed I am told, and almost as much of baby yak. It's supersoft - like touching a cloud. There's also some Jacobschaf (or Jacob sheep) wool, and two types of flax, "half bleached" and unbleached. I can't wait to spin these! These were accompanied by some German chocolate but you know how it is, it goes bad so quickly, so the chocolate didn't make it to the photo shoot.

Röhrschafia on reilu 30 g, ja suunnilleen saman verran jakinkarvaa. Unelman pehmeää! (Ehkä siitä mulle jotain keveää ja pitsistä.) Seassa oli myös mustankirjavaa jaakopinlammasta, ja pari nöttöstä pellavaa. Nämä täytyy saada kehrätä pian! :) Oli näillä kaverina saksalaista suklaata mutta ne ei säilyneet kuvaussessioon asti. (Herkästi pilaantuvaa sorttia.)

And lastly, I got inspired by the season.

Deep in the Forest Mittens

A couple of commenters asked about this, and I admit forgetting to post these, so here are the details of the pattern:

The mittens are knitted with fingering weight yarn, and sizing is accomplished by changing needle size and gauge. The gauge ranges from 34 sts/4" (small size) to 30 sts/4" (large size), and this is achieved with needles from US #1 (2,5mm) to US #3 (3 mm).You will need roughly 200 yards in both colors for the mittens. (I used Jamieson Shetland Spindrift for mine.)

Unohin tietennii speksit ohjeesta. Tässä lyhyesti:
Lapaset neulotaan ohuella kirjoneulelangalla, koko riippuu tiheydestä ja puikkokoosta. Neuletiheys on pienimmässä koossa 34 s/10cm ja isoimmassa 30 s/10cm, ja puikkokoot vastaavasti 2,5mm-3mm. Spinning Inspector Ben and Other Stories

This is my favorite picture of them all (see more in Charisa's gallery). It shows all the patterns, and the weightlessness of the shawl, and all the colors, too. I know I promised you the pattern, and it is coming soon, I just need to tweak it a bit.

Yesterday was a stormy day, grey and windy. We spent the day spinning at Charisa's. Her cat Ben joined me:

Eilinen oli myrskyinen päivä, joten viksuina naisina vietimme sen sisätiloissa kehruuhommissa. Charisan kissa Ben liittyi joukkoon tummaan.

There's a couple more videos of me and Ben the Gigolo in Charisa's gallery. Go see them too! Ben is an amazing cat, very social and calm. He spent probably half an hour sleeping while I was spinning. The fiber I use is some BFL I dyed a while back, and I wanted to try to spin thicker singles than I've spun before. As you see, I have way too much twist going in, but I might ply this to get bulky yarn for a cap or something. It looks nice, and at least the singles got Ben's seal of approval (both in taste and texture)!

Charisan galleriassa on pari muutakin videota Benistä kehruuvalvojana. Ben on tosi uskomaton kissa, rauhallinen ja seurallinen. Se nukkui sylissä varmaan puolisen tuntia kun kehräilin. Kehrättävänä oli muuten itsevärjättyä BFL:ää muutaman viikon takaa. Koitan siitä saada paksua yksisäikeistä aikaan, mutta kuten videosta näkee, kierrettä on tulossa aika hurjasti joten voi olla että kertaan sen. Joka tapauksessa säie on saanut Benin hyväksynnän, sekä maku- että muototestissä!

It turned out great! I used roughly 9 oz or 250g of yarn, and felted it slightly afterwards. It gave the bag a bit of oomph, without shrinking it too much. The bag is roughly 15" square, and holds a lot of yarn or fiber or knitting projects. I'll use this as my knitting bag. I'm writing the pattern for this, it should be available soon.

Tästä tuli hieno! Käytin tähän ehkä 250g lankaa ja nakkasin pesukoneeseen saamaan napakkuutta. Mitoista ei paljon kadonnut, veska on noin 38cm kanttiinsa. Siihen mahtuu paljon villaa, tai neuleprojekteja (jos sattuisi niin että joillakuilla olisi UFOja nurkissa). Tästä tulee neuletapaamiskassi, ja ohje tähänkin on tulossa.

My favorite part about the bag is probably the "grid" of lines in the squares. I've grown fond of lattices and grids and such, and you'll probably see more of them in the future.

Tykkään ehkä eniten kassissa värin lisäksi noista ruudukoista. Jostain syystä olen juminut ruudukoihin viime aikoina, niitä voi näkyä täällä vastaisuudessa enempikin.

The storm tore out almost all the leaves in our backyard yesterday, but there are still some. They look like lace to me.

I call this Passion, and it's quite obvious why. The inspiration came from a maple vine leaf, but the actual outcome was more or less an accident. This'll be socks for me.

Of Friends

Friends are really important. I don't remember my friends often enough, which means I don't remember birthdays or anything important, but they are close to my heart and I think of them often. They are very important to me, but I am afraid I am a very bad friend to them. And I remember this painfully well and realize it when they give me something as special as this:

Jaana made the scissorkeep herself (and has better pics than I do). I've meant to make one for myself for ages now, but never got around to it. Now I don't have to! Thank you, Jaana, for this! In the picture is also a 3 lb cone of merino thread which my friend Kristin gave me. Thanks, Kristin!

Jaana itte teki saksijutun (ja parempia kuviakin on Jaanalla). On tosi soma ja just sopiva mun saksille (ja Karvis kiittää kun sakset ei enää lymyä sohvan uumenissa). Kiitos Jaanalle tästä! Saksijutun takana on 1,3 kiloa koneneulontaan tarkoitettua merinoa Kristiniltä.

Jaana also writes that she's quite sad The Lair has no cross-stitched items anymore. Not true. I do cross-stitch occasionally, but the fact is that I am the slowest stitcher that ever existed. It takes me months (well, okay, years) to finish anything. And I hate pictures of unfinished cross-stitch items. I can't take good pictures, or even decent pictures, and cross-stitched items are the hardest to photograph. Here, I'll let you judge for yourselves. To me, this looks like.. well, a mess of stitches of which you can't even tell what it is supposed to become (it's geese and a barn):

Now, doesn't this picture of an unfinished knitting project look a lot better? To me it does, for some reason.

Mie en tykkää noista keskeneräisten pistelyjen kuvista, ne näyttää aina vähän.. jotenkin mielipuolisilta. NeuleUFOjen kuvat sen sijaan on musta hyvinkin mielenkiintosia.

This current knitting project is, to go with our subject, also related to friends. My friend sent me this yarn and these needles, and I do hope my finished project will do justice to both.

Tämä nykyinen neuleprojektikin liittyy ystäviin. Ystäväni Ilmatar pitää tapanaan lähetellä kaikkea kivaa, ja sekä lanka että puikot on Ilmattaren tekosia. En ole näitä mitenkään ansainnut mutta koitan tehä oikeutta langalle tämän projektin kanssa.

Now, regarding that domino project: As you may know (or have most definitely guessed by now), I am not a smart person. Some might even say my intelligence barely rivals the intelligence of a stale Cheeto, and they'd probably be right. (I tell myself I'm not smart, I am an artist, but it's not quite true either, I'm afraid. :D) My sister and my DH are both engineers and supersmart, but I am not. And this means I am not capable of spacial (sp?) thinking. Which is why you see that little artsy construction of paper and tape there: I had to literally cut squares (the domino squares) of paper and tape them together to make sure I have the construction of the bag just right. It seems I did. I've made some progress with this and I hope to show you the finished item very soon. I do love the colors of it - it's a fun knit! It's also great, mindless knitting whilst watching political commentaries on TV. To me, they're what Dr. Phil is to others. (Only politics is important.) ;D

Tuohon kyseiseen projektiin liittyen: kuten tiedätte (taikka arvaatte), en ole kauhian viksu ihminen. Joku voisi luonnehtia että viksuudessa väljähtänyt sipsikin peittoaa allekirjoittaneen, ja olisi varmaan siinä ihan oikeassa. Sisko ja KarvaJalka on molemmat nöörejä ja Ylen Viksuja Ihmisiä, mutta mie en, joten en kykene minkäänlaiseen avaruudelliseen hahmottamiseen. Siksi mie silppusin A4:n ja teippailin pikkuneliöitä toisiinsa, että saisin tolkun siitä miten neuloa dominoneliöt että projektista tulee mitä on aateltu. Näytti se toimivan, mutta Karviksen ilme oli mielenkiintonen kun se näki silppuamisen ja teipin teurastuksen. Itse projektista mie tykkään kovasti! Värit on mahtavat ja dominotilkkuja on aivotonta neuloa - just sopivaa telkan katselun lomassa. Kattelen töllöstä politiikkaa samalla intensiteetillä kun toiset Dr. Philiä (paitsi politiikka on tärkiää). :D

First of all, I want to thank for all the comments to the last post. They mean a lot to me, and I don't remember to thank you enough (or reply to them) so I want to thank you for all of them, they all mean a lot to me.

As for the trip, well, we didn't really go anywhere. And the reason was my hand. Mr Hairyfeet didn't want to risk an infection, which was very wise, so we ended up staying home. What happened with my hand, you ask. In short, I had a wee operation on a finger, and apparently had a bad allergic reaction to the ointment I was supposed to use to help it heal. The end result: imagine, if you will, dipping you finger in boiling oil, until you get nice 2nd or 3rd degree burns. The skin takes quite a while to heal. And it's quite painful too. I couldn't knit for over 3 weeks (mainly because the finger would not bend properly), but I did some cross-stitching and quilting which I'll show later. But the hand issue was why we couldn't go anywhere too far. I couldn't risk getting an infection in the middle of some podunk town in Montana - I was sure I'd end up in their ER/feed store/gas station/Marty's Grocery Store. I've seen some Martys in my time and I just don't trust the sign saying the little table next to the propane tanks is the ER when all the equipment seem to belong to a slaugterhouse. So we stayed home.

Meidän piti lähtiä reissuun mutta ei sitten voitu, kun käsi ei ollut kunnossa. KarvaJalka viksuna miehenä totesi, ettei kannata lähteä ettei käsi tulehdu. Lyhyesti, käsi operoitiin (tai yks sormi) jokin aika sitten ja jostain syystä se ei parantunut. Ilmeisesti joko hoito-ohje oli väärä ja/tai iho ei tykännyt voiteesta jossa sitä piti pitää. Lopputulemana toisen/kolmannen asteen palovamma ja iho totaalisesti pois. Ei kaiken kaikkiaan mikään hauska kokemus, ja vie penteleen kauan parantua. Ei sitten viittitty lähteä sompailemaan pitkin mettiä, ettei tule tulehdus, koska semmoiset tulee aina jossain jierankairassa kaukana sivistyksestä, ja jotenkin ei houkuttanut ajatus siitä että ollaan jossain käpykylässä missä ensiavun virkaa toimittaa pöytä propaanitankkien takana siinä bensa-aseman/ruokakaupan/rautakaupan takahuoneessa. Niin että pysyttiin kotosalla.

What we ended up doing is sometimes referred to as a staycation. We ended up going on two day trips, and I have some pictures for you. We went to the Columbia River Gorge and to the North Cascades National Park, and they were really awesome. First, the Columbia River Gorge.

Me päädyttiin tekemään lyhyitä päiväretkiä. Hurauteltiin North Cascades National Parkiin ja sitten etelään Columbia-joen varteen. (En viitti kääntää noita tekstejä, joten osa on vain kolmannella kotimaisella.)

This was taken at Mitchell Point. There used to be a massive tunnel carved into rock in this place, but they took it apart when they built I-84 on the Oregon side.

This is also taken on the Oregon side. The scenery is quite different once you get to the east of the Cascades - the landscape is rather dry and brownish, whereas on the western side it's very green.

The scenery is much better from the Washington side.

We made it to Beacon Rock before sunset and the scenery was absolutely magnificent.

We even thought about climbing the rock, but frankly, it is 848ft and the way up looked really intimidating. So we climbed only a little and took some pictures.

The river is really beautiful at sunset.

For some reason the air was filled with some smoke, which made the sunlight look very pink. It reminded me of the weird color of the sun last fall when we had the fires in San Diego.

I really loved the river, it was really beautiful. But I think I liked the North Cascades National Park even better.

Kuten kuvista näkyy, joki oli tosi kaunis, mutta taisin silti tykätä enempi pohjoisen kansallispuistosta.

The water is greenish because of the minerals the water brings from the mountains. There are several waterfalls along the river, this one's called the Gorge Creek Falls at Gorge Dam.

The Skagit River has several dams, and thus artificial lakes, too. This one is called the Diablo Lake.

But the best thing about the national park are the mountains. I love the mountains, the scenery and the fresh air and all.

So those were the actual trips we made. But since we got some sunshine over the past two days, I managed to take some nice pictures of Bothell, where we live. So here are some quick shots of this wee town.

Sen enempää ei varsinaisesti reissattu, mutta koska pari viime päivää on aurinko näyttäytynyt, kävin näppäisemässä kuvia mein pitäjästä, Bothellista.

In downtown Bothell, my favorite spot is definitely this mural on Festival Street. I really love the idea of bringing beauty to otherwise ordinary buildings by painting something pretty on them. Bothell artists contributed to this and it depicts some scenes from local history.

Suosikkipaikka Bothellin keskustassa on tämä seinämaalaus Festival Streetillä. Mie tykkään tästä seepianvärisestä historiallisia aiheita kuvaavasta maalauksesta tosi paljon, kiva että pitäjää on kaunistettu tämmöisillä yksityiskohdilla.

I like the downtown anyway, I think it's really pretty and has a nice, small town feeling to it. (And Bothell is a small town, but unlike so many small towns in metropolitan areas, it also feels like one.) It's especially pretty now that the trees have so much color. (I had to include this one, if only for the fact that I managed to take a picture of the mail delivery vehicle from Hell.) :D

Keskusta on muutenkin aika viehko, se tuntuu (ja on) pieni pitäjä. Toisin kuin moni ison kaupungin likellä oleva pikkukaupunki, Bothellissa tuntuu kuin ois niin sanotusti maaseudulla. Varsinkin nyt keskusta on tosi kaunis kun puut vaihtaa väriään. (Oli pakko panna tää mukaan, kun onnistuin näppään kuvan pirullisesta postiautosta.) :D

I came across this cute little advertising trick on my photowalk. It seems to be made of old vacuum parts, and it's an ad for a vacuum repair place nearby. I think it was really cute!

Mainostamiseenkin on panostettu - tämä kierrätysmateriaaleista tehty pikku imuri oli tosi suloinen ja erilainen mainoskikka.

One of my favorite places in downtown Bothell is this little bakery. Their raspberry turnovers are heavenly!

Yks suosikkipaikoista keskustassa on Hillcrest Bakery. Tuore leipä ja vadelmapiirakat on tosi hyviä!

We actually live north from downtown Bothell, in an area called Canyon Park. On the way there, there's a little shopping center called Country Village, and I try to stop there as much as I can, if only for the feeling of the place.

Meidän koti on vähän pohjoiseen keskustasta. Matkalla meille päin on pieni ostospaikka, Country Village, jossa mie koitan käydä aina silloin tällöin ihan vaan tunnelman vuoksi.

There's also a quilting store called Keepsake Cottage. It doesn't really look like a store at all!

Country Villagessa on suloinen pieni tilkkupuoti, joka ei kyllä näytä puodilta ollenkaan.

I went grocery shopping in Mill Creek (about 7 miles north from our place), and had to take a picture of this cute little "mill" in front of an apartment complex. The water actually runs the mill.

Mill Creekissä (noin 10 kilometriä meiltä pohjoiseen) on yksi ruokakauppa jossa käyn tiuhaan, ja matkalla sinne näppäisin kuvan yhden paikallisen asuntoyhtiön edessä olevasta "myllystä".

At the parking lot of the grocery store, the fall colors had suddenly appeared on the trees.

Ruokakaupan pihalla oli puut vaihtaneet syysväreihin ihan muutamassa päivässä.

On the drive home, I realized you could see Mt Rainier! This doesn't happen too often, so I took a picture of it too! I find it mind-boggling every time I see it. It's so massive - the mountain is a 2-hour drive away from our home and still you can see it if the weather is right.

Kotimatkalla huomasin että Mt Rainier näkyy. Tätä ei tapahdu kovin usein, joten otin kuvan siitäkin :) Vuorelle on matkaa pari tuntia ajaen ja silti se näkyy meille asti jos ilma on sopiva.

And while we're at the subject of mountains: there is a road which goes right past our home, and it goes over a hill, on top of which you can see the two mountain ranges of western Washington. Again, if the weather is right, that is. In the east, there are the Cascades.

Ja kun puhe on vuorista: meidän kodin ohi menee tie, joka ylittää ison mäen. Mäen päältä näkee hyvällä säällä molemmat läntisen Washingtonin vuorijonot. Idässä ovat Cascades-vuoret.

And in the west, the Olympic Mountains.

Ja lännessä Olympic Mountains.

And there is my favorite sign on the road too. I honestly have no idea why this is on the road, unless the fish actually jump onto the road :D (It's probably there to note that this is a protected creek, there's quite a few of them.)
