All Quiet on the Western Front

I've been spinning, swatching and blocking, but have very little to show. And it's still Heffalump, although Sylvie is co-operating a lot better now. I added some oil to the metal bits and got a new stretchy driveband, and almost all the squeaks and clunks are gone and she runs a lot more smoothly now. So this Heffalump yarn is not about a faulty wheel but about a faulty spinner.

I have been knitting, but only a little. I needed something completely unchallenging and easy, because Sunrise Circle Jacket is giving me a headache every time I look at the pattern. I need to recalculate increases for every single round, which makes it very slow, and my only consolation is that once I've done it, I won't have to repeat it for the second front as it is just a mirror image. (I will be able to make a mess of it, though. I'm good at it.)

Mie olen neulonu, mutta hyvin vähän. Aivokapasiteetti riitti just ja just helpostinopeastiaivottomaan, koska Sunrisen kanssa saan vain Vaikian Asian Päähän siitä ohjeesta. Joudun laskemaan joka kerroksen lisäykset uudelleen, ja sitä ei varsinaisesti voi sanoa neuleeksi, jota voisi telkankatselun lomassa tikutella. I began my version of the striped Noro Scarf, with 37 sts and #6 needles. So far it's looking good - different from what I expected but still good. There is only one bit I am not happy about.

Alotin Noro-huivia, 37 silmukalla ja 4mm (suorilla!) tikuilla. Näyttää hyvältä, mutta erilaiselta kuin mitä oisin odottanut. Vain yksi pätkä häiritsee silmää.

The contrast between the colors is not great enough for either of them to really stick out, and it bugs me, as the rest of the scarf looks great. I showed this to Mr HairyFeet and asked what he thought. He said it would bug him too, but looked absolutely mortified when I said I'd rip it. "You can't rip it, you've been working on it for so long!" Clearly, he's not a perfectionist. And 2 hours' work is not a lot to rip. So the scarf is off to the pond. I think I'll flip the order of the colors, which should make this problem disappear. Funny how the colors look so different from what they looked like on the balls. They're pretty, though.

Värien välinen kontrasti on liian pieni, että kumpikaan pääsisi oikeuksiinsa, ja tuo kohta sattuu silmään pahasti, kun muuten huivissa kontrastit ovat voimakkaat. Näytin tätä Karvakintulle ja mies myönsi, että häntäkin häiritsisi, mutta kun sanoin, että puran mokoman, ilme oli kauhunsekainen. Kuulemma ei sais purkaa kauhealla vaivalla tehtyä. Selkeästi Karvajalka ei ole perfektionisti. (Ja muutaman tunnin työ nyt ei ole kova homma purkaa.) Huivi siis sammakkolammelle, ja uusi lankajärjestys kokeiluun, josko sillä tuo katoaisi. Hassua, miten erilaiselta huivi näyttää kun vertaa kuviin kerillä. Nättiä joka tapauksessa.

Blogilistaa on moni kommentoinut, ja kalabaliikki noussut käyttöehdoista. Käyttöehdot ovat minusta hämärät ja kummalliset, ja mietin jo oman blogin poistamista listalta. Reunasilmukka tiivisti ajatukseni asiasta hyvin. Suosittelen esimerkiksi bloglinesin tai Google Readerin käyttöä, näistä jälkimmäistä voi käyttää suomeksikin. Bloglinesia olen käyttänyt jonkun aikaa, ja ollut tyytyväinen. Jos en olisi jo vaihtanut bloglinesiin, tekisin sen nyt. En ole tyytyväinen "uudistuksiin" enkä käyttöehtoihin ("tarkennuksista" huolimatta), ja voi olla, että poistan Luolan listalta jossain vaiheessa.

Sylvie's First Day at the Track

Took Sylvie out for a quick spin yesterday.

Kokeiltiin Sylvin kanssa vähän.

I think I got the hang of it fairly quickly, but turns out, the wheel is like a supercharged drop spindle. It's incredibly fast! And fun, too!

Aika nopeasti se alkoi sujua, mutta rukki on kyllä nopea peli kun värttinään vertaa.

I played with the green BFL, but I ran out, so the next spinning pictures will be more exciting. I can't promise there will be something else besides Heffalump yarns, though.

This last picture shows my third try with the spindle (right), and my first try with the wheel (left). I got used to the spindle and got somewhat even light sport-weight yarn with it. However, I feel I'm back in square one with Sylvie. There were times when we found a common ground, but it will take a while to get used to the wheel. I do like the consistency and the rhythm of it, and even though Sylvie did put up a fight when I fixed the wheel, she behaved well when I tried spinning with her. She needs a couple of tweaks still: the wheel rolls evenly, but there's a clunk coming from the axel (I think it'll go away if I get the doubletreadle kit) and she needs a nylon driveband and a new flyer eventually, but that should make her a perfectly functioning wheel.

Next time, less spinning (maybe), more knitting - and not just swatches!

Viimisessä kuvassa on kolmas (ja toistaiseksi viimeinen) erä värttinällä kehrättyä (oikealla), ja ensimmäinen rukkiyritys (vasemmalla). Kerkesin tottua värttinään mukavasti ja sain sillä yllättävän tasaista lankaa aikaan. Sylttyräisen kanssa tuntui kuin olisi palannut takaisin lähtöruutuun. Ajoittain jopa tuntui, että sain juonesta kiinnikin, mutta menee varmana aikaa, ennen kuin kaikki Sylvin salat on selvillä. Tykkään hirmuisesti rukin rytmistä ja tasaisuudesta, ja vaikka Sylversson (rakas lapsi jne) pisti hanttiin korjauksen aikana, rukki käyttäytyi varsin mallikkaasti kehrättäessä. Pyörä pyörii nyt tasaisesti, pientä kolinaa kuuluu akselista (mutta se korjautunee jos hankin doubletreadle-paketin), ja puuvillainen nyöri vaihtuu muoviseen, joten mukavasti toimivasta rukista taitaa tulla erittäin hyvin toimiva sellainen.

Ens kerralla vähempi kehruuta (ehkä) ja enempi neulontaa - eikä pelkkiä näytelappuja!

Dustbunnies and Sylvie

Usually I don't mind the occasional dustbunny in the house. But these are huge! My house has been invaded by giant balls of fluff - the biggest weighs a pound!

Yleensä pienet sohvanaliset villakoiraparvet ei meillä haittaa, mutta tämä on kyllä liikaa. Tulevat pöydille ja sohville ja painavat puoli kiloa!

The biggest is natural white Blue Faced Leicester, the grey is Icelandic wool and the brown is natural brown BFL. I love the colors, and the softness of the fiber. I hope I can spin them so that the yarn does justice to the beautiful fibers.

Isoin jätti on luonnonvalkoista BFL:ää, kuten ruskeahkokin, ja harmaa on islanninvillaa. Värit on jotain käsittämättömän kaunista. Toivottavasti osaan kehrätä näistä jotain nättiä, että kuitu pääsee oikeuksiinsa.

And as you can see, we have a new toy here in the Lair. We call her Sylvia. Or Sylvie for short.

She's an Ashford Traditional who needed a new home. Sylvia's story is another one in the "good things come to those who wait" category. I almost bought a similar wheel (also made in 1979) a while ago, but DH didn't want a wheel in the house. Well, this time Sylvia came to us, so there was very little DH could do :D

Sylvie needs a little bit of work: the wheel needs a dab of glue, and she needed a new driveband, some hooks, a brakeband (and a knob for it) and a tension knob, but I've already ordered the tension knob, I bought the maintenance kit (which covered most of the issues), and I should have the wheel up and running by the end of the week. I think Sylvie will be an excellent wheel once I've fixed everything.

Rukin tarina on jälleen sarjasta "hyvää kannattaa odottaa": meinasin ostaa täysin vastaavan ja saman ikäisen (vuodelta 1979) joku aika sitten, mutta Karvakoipi pisti hanttiin. Vie kuulemma tilaa. Tällä kertaa Sylvi punki sisälle, joten meillä oli aika vähän sanomista asiaan :D Ihan pikkuisen työtä tämän kanssa on, ennenkuin se on toimivassa kunnossa: uusi nyöri tarvitaan, samoin koukkuja, brakeband ja sille tappi ja tension knob (mitä ikinä ne onkin suomeksi). Ostin jo Ashfordin oman huoltopaketin, jossa suurin osa olikin tarvikkeista. Vielä tirpaisen rautakauppaan, että saan pyörän kasattua, joten viikon lopulla varmaan pääsen jo koeajamaan. Sylvistä tulee vielä varmana hyvä rukki kunhan se on kunnossa.

A Skein a Day Keeps the Doctor Away!

Yes, I spun my second skein. It's what beginner yarn, I'm told, is supposed to look like: lumpy, bumpy, thick and thin, wonderfully uneven "novelty" yarn.

Toinen vyyhti värttinältä, ja tuloksena aitoa aloittelijalankaa: mönttistä ja ohuenohutta "efektilankaa".

I can't say I'm proud of it, but it was a good practise. I didn't overtwist this one, and I got some valuable practise on drafting. When I knitted this, it was surprisingly simple to knit, despite the lumps. However, I think the fiber could've used a tighter twist, it is wonderfully soft and created a halo when blocking. The picture above shows the swatch, which is quite even compared to the structure of the yarn.

Spinning felt easier this time, although I still can't say I like the spindle. This is a good second skein in my opinion, but it is quite obvious we have a very long way to go.

En tarkalleen ottaen ole aivan ylpeä tästä, mutta hyvästä harjoituksesta se kävi. Hillitsin kierrettä, joten tämä ei muistuta lankapuhelimen kaapelia, ja sain kuidun vetelynkin käymään verraten tasaisesti. Neulominen oli aika helppoa, vaikka mönttejä olikin. Kehrääminen kävi aika helposti, mutta en vieläkään ole ihastunut värttinään työkaluna. Vyyhti on melko hyvä kakkosvyyhdiksi, mutta selkeästi harjoittelua tarvitaan vielä paljon.

I haven't been madly spinning all weekend, I knitted something, too.

Pelkästään kehruuksi ei Luolan touhut ole menneet, on täällä tikuteltukin.

It's my second Sunrise Circle Jacket. The first one was knitted with KnitPicks Wool of the Andes, and so is the second one. The first time I knitted this pretty cardi, I knitted the yarn to the required gauge and the fabric turned out to be very stretchy and drapey, which is not what you want with the shape of the cardigan. (I had to felt the first version slightly when it stretched horribly in blocking.) I've worn the first one almost to pieces, and I do like the first one a lot, but it's not in a very good shape anymore.

Sunrise Circle Jacketin uusintapainos on puikoilla. Ensimmäinen versio oli KnitPicksin Wool of the Andes -lankaa, ja niin on tämä toinenkin. Ensimmäisellä kerralla toteutin ohjetta kirjaimellisesti, ja neuleesta tuli vötkyläinen ja liian iso. Muuten se ei olisi haitannut, mutta luiruava neulos ei tee oikeutta mallille, joten eka versio kävi kuivurissa tiivistymässä. Sitä on pidetty paljon, vaikka se on edelleen vähän iso, ja se alkaa olla kohta entinen.

This time, I got a much tighter gauge, and the fabric feels very sturdy, yet - this being WotA - very soft. I have to modify this a little, but so far it looks good. (Thank you, mathyjones, for the help with the math!) My favorite part of the cardi is the beginning of the semicircles, when you can see them growing out of the sleeve. I'm hoping to finish this quickly, I can't wait to wear it!

Nyt neuloin tarkoituksella tiivistä, ja neulos näyttäisi olevan napakkaa, mutta silti pehmoista. Etukappaleissa tarvitaan korkeampaa matematiikkaa, mutta onneksi kanssaneuloja auttoi etukappaleiden kanssa. Mie tykkään erityisesti tuosta etukappaleen alusta, kun puoliympyrä alkaa kasvaa kainalosta. Tätä on kiva neuloa, ja tekee mieli tikutella kiireen vilkkaa - mie haluan tämän päälle nopeasti :)

The Point of No Return

I've been wanting to learn spinning for a while now, and I was lucky enough to meet Kristin, and she came over today to show me how it's done. I tried a drop spindle, and it was tricky at first but I think I got the hang of it fairly well. I didn't even get too much lumpy (ahem) novelty yarn, and I felt very proud of myself. The wheel felt a lot trickier, mostly because I was going way too fast. But I felt more comfortable at the wheel, even though the spindle wasn't too bad, either.

Ravelryn kautta satuin tutustumaan Kristiniin, joka tuli ja näytti, miten lankaa tehdään. Ja olipa lystiä! Mie kokeilin värttinällä ensin, ja se oli ihan ok, mutta varsinainen rukki tuntui kyllä mukavammalta. (Tai no, ainakin nopeammalta.) Värttinällä opettelen vielä, että saan tuntumaa siihen kuidun vetelemiseen ja langan tasaisuuteen, ja siirryn sitten rukkeihin, kun on vähän enempi kokemusta. Ihan kauhean möykkyistä lankaa en saanut aikaiseksi, ja salaa paukuttelin henkisiä henkseleitä.

I love the colors of Kristin's fiber. I'll try to ply this later and see how it knits up. Kristin left me some fiber to play with and I think I'll try to make something a little thinner tomorrow.

This might be the beginning of something great. I enjoyed spinning enormously - it feels so organic and natural - and can't wait to spin more! Thank you, Kristin, for a wonderful afternoon!

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

I went yarn shopping yesterday, although it might be said I don't need any new yarn. To my defense, I can say I only bought yarn for which I had a project in mind already. And this brings me to the topic: sometimes waiting is good.

Mie sitten pitkällisen pähkäilyn lopputulemana tirpaisin lankakauppaan eilen. Toki uuden langan ostamista voitaisiin harkita Luolassa vakavasti, ihan kauheasti uutta lankaa ei tarvita. En sentään langennut heräteostoksiin, vaan kaikille on ihan suunnitelmansa.

Have you seen the movie The Fountain? It's not a great movie, not even a very good movie (but Hugh Jackman's in it, and that's about all the justification I need to see a movie!), but the woman is wearing the prettiest hat and scarf ever. The craziest thing is, both the scarf and the hat are white and knitted in garter stitch. But they're gorgeous, absolutely stunning. I think the yarn gives the knits a nice halo which makes them so pretty.

I saw the movie a few months ago, and desperately wanted a hat and a scarf like that. I also wanted to use angora for them, as angora produces exactly that stunning halo. The only bad thing about my plan was that angora, as you know, is not exactly cheap.

Elokuvassa The Fountain, naisella on päällään käsittämättömän upea valkoinen ainaoikein-neuleella tehty pipo ja huivi. Kuulostaa tosi tylsältä, mutta ilmeisesti lankana on ollut jotain angoran tyyppistä, koska neuleet hohtavat upeasti. Näin elokuvan jokin aika sitten, ja siitä asti olen etsinyt lankaa samanlaiseen settiin. Ongelmana oli vain, että angora ei tarkalleen ottaen ole halpaa koskaan. (Mohair tai alpakka olisi ollut myös mahdollinen ratkaisu, mutta mohair kutittaa, ja sopivaa alpakkaa ei talsinut vastaan.)

So yesterday, when I found white Elsebeth Lavold Angora in the sale basket, I went a little crazy. I knew the moment I saw the yarn that I had to have it. And I did buy 6 skeins of it, and I hope they will be enough. They were only $6/skein, which didn't wreck my budget at all.

Eilen lankakaupan alekorissa kurkisti valkoista Elsebeth Lavold Angoraa. Poimin ne pois kylmästä maailmasta oman korin lämpöön, se oli ehdottomasti lanka, joka oli pakko saada. Toivon mukaan kuusi vyyhtiä riittää. $6 vyyhdiltä oli suorastaan järkevä hinta, joten nämä eivät romuttaneet budjettia.

Like I said, I went a little crazy. And I managed to wreck my budget eventually, by stumbling accross some Noro. And Cascade 220.

Budjetin romutti sen sijaan kompastuminen Noro-koriin. Ja Cascade 220-hyllyn ääressä käytiin myös taistelu, jossa miesvahingot olivat mittavia. En voinut jättää niitä sinne. Poloiset huutelivat päästä mukaan!

The Noros will become a striped scarf for me. I wanted to buy Silk Garden in colorway 47, since they had a few balls of it, but since I couldn't figure out a definite project for them, I left them in the store. (I may regret this later, but at the time I managed to congratulate myself of such a powerful display of self-control.) So I only bought 2 balls in 84 and two in 252.

The Cascade 220 is a beautiful heathered grey, which I bought for a scarf for Mr. HairyFeet. I love the color, and I think it'll look nice on him. If he doesn't want it, I can always knit myself a neckwarmer. I actually wanted to buy a skein for a neckwarmer, but there wasn't a color I wanted. I'll buy it when I find the perfect color yarn for it, and as we've seen with the angora, it'll come along, soon enough.

Noroista tulee raitahuiveli Brooklyntweedin tapaan minulle. Mieli teki ostaa lopetettua neljäseiskaakin, mutta koska mielessä ei ollut varsinaista projektia, jätin ne kauppaan. (Saatan katua tätä vielä, mutta marketissa haahuillessani onnittelin itseä erinomaisesta mielenlujuudesta ja itsehillinnästä.) Joten koriin angoroiden kaveriksi hyppäsi kaksi kerää väriä 84 ja kaksi kerää väriä 252.

Cascaden väri on upea meleerattu tummanharmaa, josta ajattelin KarvaJalalle kaulahuivia talveksi. Tykkään väristä erityisesti, ja se varmaan näyttää KarvaJalan päällä hyvältä. Jos miekkonen ei huivia halua, keksin varmana tälle käyttöä, esmes kauluriksi. Meinasin jo ostaakin kaulurilangat, mutta sopivaa sävyä ei löytynyt. Ostan lankaa kauluriin sitten kun sopivan värinen lanka marssii vastaan, ja kuten angoroiden kanssa nähtiin, hyvää kannattaa odottaa.

On Serial Killers ... and More!

We went to get our WA driver's licenses yesterday. For some reason, people always end up looking like serial killers in official pictures, don't they? I look like I'm 40+ (and not in a good way) and like I gave up on life completely. Every single time. (No, you don't get any pics on this, no way!) If visas and other documents were decided upon pictures only, no one would be able to travel or drive a car or anything like that. I guess that's why they want to interview people in advance. "No, sir, I don't eat kittehs for breakfast, it's just the picture." (The fur tickles, I find.)

So yesterday.. not my finest hour. Which sums up this week nicely.

Käytiin hakemassa ajokortteja tähän osavaltioon eilen. Jostain syystä sitä päätyy näyttämään sarjamurhaajalta virallisissa kuvissa. Mie näytän elämäänväsyneeltä nelikymppiseltä aina noissa virallisissa kuvissa. Ehkä kuvien takia pitää käydä näyttäytymässä virastoissa, että voivat varmistaa, että mitään instituutioista karanneita ei vaella vallan valtoimenaan. "Ei, en syö kissanpoikia aamupalaksi, son vain toi kuva." (Liian karvaisia, sanoisin.)

Että ei ollut kovin hehkeä eilinen päivä. Ei oikeastaan koko mennyt viikkokaan.

Esmes, mie ostin sukkalankaa pari viikkoa sitten, ja tiesin heti, millaisen pintaneuleen haluan sukkiin. Harvoin edes haluan pintaneuleita sukkiin, mutta näissä oli aika viehko melkein yksivärinen vihreä, joka minusta sopi mielessä väikkyneen hauskan kuvioneuleen seuraksi. Olin aika ylpeä itsestä ja paukuttelin jo henkisiä henkseleitä. No, ylpeydellähän on aika ruma loppu.

For example, I bought some sock yarn a couple of weeks ago, and just knew the stitch pattern I wanted to use. I thought I was being clever and creative and was very proud of myself. Well, you know what they say about pride.

They look surprisingly like Conwys, don't they? They do, because the stitch pattern happens to be the same as in Conwys. So I managed to "create" something that someone much cleverer and much, much more creative than me had already come up with. Yay me. Well, I still like the socks a lot. They're not entirely finished yet, I have a few inches of cuffs to knit still.

Ettei ois Conwyjen mallikerta siinä. Ihan itse osasin "keksiä" pyörää uudelleen. Kyllä tästä sopii jo itseä selkääntaputella. Sukat on kyllä kivat, mie tykkään näistä jo vaikkeivat ole ihan valmiit vielä. Vartta uupuu muutama sentti.

So now that we've established I am capable of coming up with what others have done before, I decided to tackle an actual pattern. I'm test-knitting Arteeni's Falco, and this is what it looks like.

Very, very pretty. I used just some plain old KnitPicks lace-weight merino for the sample but I'm thinking of knitting this shawl in some lovely alpaca. Maybe with beads, they'd go nicely with those little blossoms in the middle of the diamonds.

DH's birthday was on Friday, and we usually don't celebrate much on birthdays, let alone buy or make gifts, but this time, I came up with the perfect thing for him. He walks to work, and sometimes the mornings can be a bit cold. I bet his hands are freezing so I figured I'd knit him a pair of gloves.

KarvaJalalla oli synttärit perjantaina, ja me ei yleensä paljon juhlistella tai lahjota, mutta tänä vuonna keksin mielestäni oivan lahjan miekkoselle. Se nimittäin talsii töihin, ja aamut saattaa olla pikkasen kirpakoita, joten näppejä saattaa paleltaa. Mie tirpasin sille siis hanskat.

Look familiar, don't they? They should, because they're almost exactly like the gloves I knitted for me a little over a year ago. I used the same yarn, Pirtin kehräämö's fingering weight yarn in natural gray, and the same needle size too. These were a quick and fun knit and I can't get enough of the beautiful color of the yarn. And Mr. HairyFeet even said he'd wear them! They fit him nicely, but since the weather is now quite warm (compared to the snow storm a week ago), I don't have a picture of him wearing them.

Näyttänevät tutulta, ja pitäisikin, kun ne on melkein tismalleen samanlaiset kuin mitä tikuttelin itselle joku aika sitten. Sama lanka ja samat puikotkin näissä on. Olivat oikein nopeat ja mukavat neuloa, ja mie tykkään Pirtin kampalangan luonnollisesta harmaan sävystä. Ja KarvaJalka jopa lupasi pitää näitä! Ne sopivat miekkoselle oikein hyvin, mutta koska kelit ovat lämmenneet sitten viime viikonlopun, en saanut kuvaa näistä kädessä.

So this week, I've reknitted a previous project, reinvented a very pretty and clever design and knitted someone else's pattern, whilst also looking like someone truly disturbed. A good week, then, I'd say.

No update on Swirly. I frogged the first sleeve, I didn't like the outcome. I cast on again, and now it might even look relatively okay, so I should have some pictures soon. However, if next weeks are anything like this one was, I wouldn't exactly hold my breath.

Of to knitting. Or maybe yarn shopping. I need some cheering up! Or inspiration at least. Them wheels don't reinvent themselves, you know. And what better place for some inspiration than a yarn shop!

Tällä viikolla on siis lämmitelty vanhoja, keksitty pyörää uudelleen, ja neulottu toisten juttuja. Siinäpä se tämä viikko sitten olikin. Kiehkuravilliksen eka hiha meni lammelle sammakkokarkeloihin, kun neulejälki ei miellyttänyt. Uusi yritys on työnalla, mutta ihan kauheesti en odottelis päivityksiä aivan heti, jos seuraavat viikot on yhtään samansorttisia kun tämä mennyt sellainen.

Takaisin neulomaan, ehkä lankakaupan kautta. Pieni piristys olisi paikallaan :)
